Minority Students receive Free Money to Pay for College Education

Occasionally every type of student requires a little help in times of hardship no matter what their ethnic or non-ethnic status maybe. Paying for college out of your own pocket is not a viable option for the most minority students, considering the price tag of attending even a community college.

The good news is that school and college grants are available for minority students and almost everybody in some way fits into a minority group.

Different Types of Minority College Grants

Minority grants fall in to two main categories:

  • Non-ethnic minority grants provide need-based financial aid to students challenged by physical barriers or who are otherwise disadvantaged compared to the average student, regardless of ethnicity. College grants for students with disabilities assist physically challenged students or those who present learning difficulties such as autism, attention deficit disorder and dyslexia. Women’s college grants are available to help females access education in areas that have historically been male orientated.
  • Ethnic minority grants provide financial assistance to overcome the challenges faced by students from ethnic minority backgrounds wishing to pursue an education or work in professional fields. School and college grants are typically available for; African American Students, Native American Students, Hispanic and Asian Students, of which represent the main ethnic student populations of America, although there are additional college grants for minorities from smaller ethnic groups too.

Difference Between Minority College Grants and Scholarships
Minority grants are sources of money provided to individuals in order to tackle the challenges faced by underrepresented students wishing to obtain a school or college education, and are often based on financial need. College scholarships on the other hand tend to be merit based or sometimes an amalgamation of both. Usually ethnic minorities can obtain school and college grants for Hispanic students, Asian, African American and Native American students. Whereas non-ethnic minority grants include disabled students, women, students with learning difficulties and other small groups of people not based on ethnicity. As with many educational grant opportunities, the majority of minority education funding derives from government sources.

Where to find Minority Grants

A large majority of minority financial aid comes from federal and state government grant programs in the form of need-based grants for minority students and those with or from low-income families. The most common federal grants include the:

  • Academic Competitiveness Grant (AC Grant)
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
  • Pell Grant
  • National SMART Grant

Each year these federal grant monies are dispersed mostly to individuals from minority backgrounds and disabled students, providing the main financial backbone for low-income student’s education. If you are a minority student and wish to apply for these federal school and college grants, In order to qualify you must complete and submit a FAFSA application.

If fail to apply or don’t qualify for the Pell Grant, then you will not be eligible for the AC Grant, FSEOG or a SMART grant as students MUST be in receipt of the Pell grant in order to be considered for the others.

Other Sources for Minority Grants

Do not rely solely on government  student financial aid funds for your education; there are several other sources of college grants for minority student available to supplement you education fees.

In your grant research preparation, don’t forget to include minority foundations and organisations on your list of tasks. If you are serious about your education and need all the financial help you can get, organisations such as the American Indian College Fund, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Hispanic College Fund and the United Negro College Fund all provide financial assistance for minority college students.
