Grant Programs
Asian American Journalists Association
Founded in 1981, The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) has been a leading source of grants and financial support for Asian American students pursuing degrees in broadcasting and journalism related studies. There are three prominent grant programs available to qualifying students offered by the AAJA.
- The Stanford Chen Internship Grant is available to Asian internship students working in a broadcasting station or a small newspaper print company. Three grants are available each year providing awards of $1,750, one of which is reserved for an Asian student with residency in the Pacific Northwest.
- The Chicago Tribune Print and New Media Internship Grant program is available to Asian students working in online and print news-organizations. Several $1,500 grants are awarded annually to help students with transportation and living expenses.
- The AAJA Broadcasting Internship Grant is awarded to aspiring AAPI male television or radio broadcasters. Administered by the scholarship fund of Lloyd LaCuesta and the late Sam Chu Lin, awards are worth $2,500.
Asian Cultural Council Funding
The Asian Cultural Council administers fellowships and grants for Asian students engaging in cultural exchange programs in the visual and performing arts fields between the United States and Asia.
Primarily the fellowships and grant programs are awarded to Asian students working in visual and performing arts fields for the purpose of study, conducting research, undertaking specialized training or participating in observation tours within the United States. However, a number of grants are awarded to American citizens pursuing similar interests who require grant assistance to fund cultural exchange projects in Asian countries.
To apply for grant and fellowship assistance through the ACC, Asian students are required to submit a request letter. Upon review of the student’s activity, if it meets the Asian Cultural Council’s funding guidelines, they will request additional information for consideration.
