Students Recieve Help from the Alabama State Government
Residents of Alabama wishing to study in-state can sometimes receive college grants to help finance their tuition and related expenses from the state governments Commission on Higher Education. Like most U.S. states grants, Alabama utilizes profits generated by state lottery games and other revenue generating programs setting aside a large portion of this money to help students in need of financial aid.

There are several grants for students attending a college in Alabama, which those from low-income households are eligible to apply. These opportunities are accessible by applicants attending both private and public colleges and universities, technical, vocational schools and community colleges. Different types of students can apply for these grants including women and minority students although keep in mind that the Alabama-state college grant programs are designed to help students who demonstrate a need for financial assistance.

Undergraduates Can Get Free Money from the State

Undergraduate grants are available to students who are permanent residents of the state of Alabama. If you are attending one of the 80 eligible in-state colleges or universities, you could receive between $300 and $2,500 in free money to pay for your education. This money is funded through the Alabama Student Assistance Program which is a need-based financial aid incentive provided to low-income students participating in undergraduate work. Students eligible for this program can apply in each academic year of undergraduate study. In order to apply for the Alabama Student Assistance Program students are required to complete a FAFSA application and awards will be issued based on their financial need assessment.

None Need-Based Grants for Undergrad Study

Most college grants are issued based on financial need, but the State of Alabama also offer grants to students who simply wish to study at undergraduate level. The Alabama Student Grant Program offers all types of student a grant up to $1,200 per academic year. This program is provided on a first-come first served basis and funds are limited. To be eligible you must be a permanent Alabama resident studying either full-time or part-time in one of the following colleges or universities:

  • Huntingdon College
  • Judson College
  • Miles College
  • Oakwood College
  • Samford University
  • Selma University
  • Southeastern Bible College
  • Southern Vocational College
  • Spring Hill College
  • Stillman College
  • University of Mobile

Students who wish to apply for the Student Grant Assistance Program must request an application form from the financial aid department of the college or university they wish to attend listed above. Deadlines are printed on the application forms.

Cheerleaders could Cheer to the Sound of $10,000 in Free Grant Money

As bizarre as this may sound cheerleaders can receive a participatory grant up to the value of $10,000. The grant is offered to freshman and transfer students attending the Alabama’s Huntington College and can also be received by participants in the marching band and dance team. This grant program is called the “Scarlet and Gray Grant” and is one of several other $10,000 grant programs that Huntington college students may be eligible to apply for. The college lists all the grant and financial aid packages that they offer on their website.
